Adam Hasner was first elected in 2002 and is currently in his third term representing the people of House District 87, which includes the coastal communities of southern Palm Beach County and Northern Broward County including Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach.
Representative Hasner currently serves as the House Majority Leader and is the first legislator from Palm Beach County to serve in this position in over 50 years. His committee assignments include the House Policy and Budget Council, as well as the Rules and Calendar Council.
Since being elected, Representative Hasner has been one of Florida’s leaders in the area of promoting renewable energy technologies – such as ethanol, solar and ocean currents – to reduce our state’s dependence on foreign oil and help protect our environment.
Representative Hasner has been a champion for innovative biomedical research including having secured $120 million for cancer and Alzheimer’s research and treatment that will help to find cures while improving the quality of care available to the millions of Floridians who are battling these diseases. He has also been on the front lines of working to transform healthcare in our community with his work to recruit the Scripps Research Institute and establish a four year medical school program at the Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton campus.
Representative Hasner has been recognized for his outstanding commitment to economic development through science, research and technology and was named a 2006 Champion of Business by the Associated Industries of Florida. For his strong support of issues important to the small business community he has been named to the Florida Chamber of Commerce Honor Roll in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Additionally, he was twice named as the American Cancer Society Legislator of the year in 2005 and 2006. And in 2007, he was the recipient of the prestigious Florida Atlantic University President’s Talon Award.
While honored to receive these awards, Representative Hasner is most proud to count among his legislative accomplishments his work as the sponsor of the nation’s toughest anti-hazing law to keep Florida’s students safe against a silent epidemic plaguing our schools, universities and social organizations. Additionally, in 2007, Representative Hasner championed and worked tirelessly as a lead sponsor for the passage of the Protecting Florida’s Investments Act making Florida the first state in the nation to require the state pension board to divest all state employee retirement fund investments from companies that do business in Iran and Sudan. As a product of Palm Beach County’s public schools and the son of two former public school teachers, Representative Hasner also continues to fight for the “65% Solution” – fiscally responsible legislation which would require more money to be spent in Florida’s public school classrooms on teachers and kids, while spending less on administrative overhead and bureaucracy. This is consistent with his philosophy that the money government spends is your money to begin with, and he never stops working to keep government spending under control and keep taxes low and affordable for all Floridians.
